Alternative method for volumetric core removal in hardsetting soils Scientia Agricola
Lima,Herdjania Veras de; Silva,Álvaro Pires da; Imhoff,Sílvia; Neves Junior,Afrânio Ferreira.
Due to the narrow window of ideal moisture conditions required for collecting undisturbed soil samples from hardsetting horizons in the field, this study compared the efficiency of an alternative method of soil core removal in the laboratory with that of the traditional field method by using measurements of soil bulk density data (Db). In a first sampling, cylinders were removed with a soil sampler in the field. In a second sampling, large soil blocks were removed with Kubiena-type zinc (brass) boxes in the field. Volumetric core cylinder samples were removed from these blocks in the laboratory with a manual hydraulic pump. There were no differences between the Db values determined from the laboratory and the field coring method. The laboratory method was...

Effect of compaction on microbial activity and carbon and nitrogen transformations in two oxisols with different mineralogy Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva,Sérgio Ricardo; Silva,Ivo Ribeiro da; Barros,Nairam Félix de; Sá Mendonça,Eduardo de.
The use of machinery in agricultural and forest management activities frequently increases soil compaction, resulting in greater soil density and microporosity, which in turn reduces hydraulic conductivity and O2 and CO2 diffusion rates, among other negative effects. Thus, soil compaction has the potential to affect soil microbial activity and the processes involved in organic matter decomposition and nutrient cycling. This study was carried out under controlled conditions to evaluate the effect of soil compaction on microbial activity and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) mineralization. Two Oxisols with different mineralogy were utilized: a clayey oxidic-gibbsitic Typic Acrustox and a clayey kaolinitic Xantic Haplustox (Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo ácrico - LVA,...

EFFECTS OF CLAY FRACTION MINERALOGY ON PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES OF A YELLOW ULTISOL TREATED WITH CHISELING REA
Nogueira,Deise C. S.; Fernandes,Carolina; Souza,Luma C. de; Camargo,Lívia A.; Ferraudo,Antonio S..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of minerals in the clay fraction on physical attributes of Yellow Ultisol cultivated with sugarcane and prepared with two different treatments: chiseling across the entire area and chiseling only in planting rows. The samples were collected from four layers of soil at eight months after planting. We assessed the texture of the soil, levels of iron extracted by dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB) and ammonium acid oxalate (AAO), ratio of kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite), soil bulk density, and soil penetration resistance. The first area showed a higher ratio of kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite) and the second area had greater levels of iron extracted by DCB. Levels of iron extracted by DCB...

Gamma-ray computed tomography to evaluate changes in the structure of a clayey soil due to agricultural traffic - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i3.4727 Agronomy
Pires, Luiz Fernando; Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa.
A first generation gamma-ray computed tomography (CT) equipped with a 137Cs source was used to investigate changes in soil structure due to agricultural machinery traffic. Core samples with volume of 55 cm3 were collected at the surface (0-10 cm) of a Brazilian clayey soil. Significant alterations in soil structure occurred after two passages of tractor wheels, with important decreases in soil porosity. CT data allowed a continuous analysis of soil bulk density and also soil porosity distribution for 1.25 and 1.20 mm layers, which cannot be provided by traditional methods commonly used in soil physics.

Physical properties of a rhodic haplustox under two sugarcane harvesting systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Machado,Walquíria; Telles,Tiago Santos; Tavares Filho,João; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima; Alves,Grace Bungenstab; Borges,José Luiz Bernardo.
This study had the purpose of evaluating the effects of two management types of sugarcane: harvesting of burnt cane (BCH) and mechanized harvesting of unburnt green cane (MCH), on some soil physical properties of a dystrophic Rhodic Haplustox. The data were then compared with results for the same soil type under native forest. A completely randomized design was used, with three treatments and 20 replications. The following characteristics were determined: organic matter, aggregate stability, soil bulk density, and porosity at depths of 0-0.20 m and soil penetration resistance. After 15 years of cultivation, there were some alterations in the soil under cane burnt before harvesting, evidenced by a drop in the weighted average diameter of stable aggregates...

Physical Properties of Soil Structures Identified by the Profil Cultural under Two Soil Management Systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Macedo,Sônia de Fátima Schilickmann; Grimaldi,Michel; Medina,Cristiane Conti; Cunha,José Edézio da; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima; Tavares Filho,João.
ABSTRACT Soil structure plays an important role in water retention, infiltration capacity, porosity, and penetration resistance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and physical properties of Oxisol soils (bulk density and macro-, micro-, and total porosity) in the structures identified using the profil cultural method in areas under two different management practices (perennial pasture and sugarcane). Three pits were dug in each plot to find out how homogeneous morphological structural units (HMSU) were organized in the soil. Next, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (Ki) was measured in situ inside each HMSU using a triple-ring infiltrometer at multiple suction. Six samples were collected (two samples for each kind...

Pore system changes of damaged Brazilian oxisols and nitosols induced by wet-dry cycles as seen in 2-D micromorphologic image analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pires,Luiz F.; Reichardt,Klaus; Cooper,Miguel; Cássaro,Fabio A.M.; Dias,Nivea M.P.; Bacchi,Osny O.S..
Soil pore structure characterization using 2-D image analysis constitutes a simple method to obtain essential information related to soil porosity and pore size distribution (PSD). Such information is important to infer on soil quality, which is related to soil structure and transport processes inside the soil. Most of the time soils are submitted to wetting and drying cycles (W-D), which can cause important changes in soils with damaged structures. This report uses 2-D image analysis to evaluate possible modifications induced by W-D cycles on the structure of damaged soil samples. Samples of three tropical soils (Geric Ferralsol, GF; Eutric Nitosol, EN; and Rhodic Ferralsol, RF) were submitted to three treatments: 0WD, the control treatment in which...

Precompression stress and compression index depend on the property used to represent the soil deformation in the compression curve Ciência Rural
Gubiani,Paulo Ivonir; Jong Van Lier,Quirijn de; Reichert,José Miguel; Goulart,Rafael Ziani; Fontanela,Eracilda.
ABSTRACT: During linear deformation (h) in a soil sample, the variation of the void ratio with respect to deformation (dε/dh) and the respective variation of soil bulk density (dρ/dh) are identical only for a specific value of h. Consequently, if two compression curves are drawn for the same soil sample, one using ρ and the other using ε, there are differences in both the calculated precompression stress (σp) and compression index (Ic). In this study, we highlight the causes by a mathematical analysis and an experimental investigation, quantifying the differences in σp and Ic when using ε and ρ. σp and Ic were calculated for 103 compression curves of an ultisol and 193 of an oxisol. The σp (kPa) using ρ (σpρ) was greater than when using ε (σpε), and...

Recovery of soil physical properties by green manure, liming, gypsum and pasture and spontaneous native species¹ Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Santos Batista Bonini,Carolina dos; Alves,Marlene Cristina.
Inadequate usage can degrade natural resources, particularly soils. More attention has been paid to practices aiming at the recovery of degraded soils in the last years, e.g, the use of organic fertilizers, liming and introduction of species adapted to adverse conditions. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate the recovery of physical properties of a Red Latosol (Oxisol) degraded by the construction of a hydroelectric power station. In the study area, a soil layer about 8m thick had been withdrawn by heavy machines leading not only to soil compaction, but resulting in high-degree degradation. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with nine treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of: 1- soil...

Soil compaction and eucalyptus growth in response to forwarder traffic intensity and load Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva,Sérgio Ricardo da; Barros,Nairam Félix de; Costa,Liovando Marciano da; Leite,Fernando Palha.
During timber exploitation in forest stands harvesting machines pass repeatedly along the same track and can cause soil compaction, which leads to soil erosion and restricted tree root growth. The level of soil compaction depends on the number of passes and weight of the wood load. This paper aimed to evaluate soil compaction and eucalyptus growth as affected by the number of passes and wood load of a forwarder. The study was carried out in Santa Maria de Itabira county, Minas Gerais State - Brazil, on a seven-year-old eucalyptus stand planted on an Oxisol. The trees were felled by chainsaw and manually removed. Plots of 144 m² (four rows 12 m long in a 3 x 2 m spacing) were then marked off for the conduction of two trials. The first tested the traffic...

Soil physical properties and soil organic carbon content in northeast Brazil: long-term tillage systems effects Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Fernanda Cristina Caparelli; Ferreira,Gabriel William Dias; Souza,João Lucas Santos; Vieira,Matheus Emannuel Oliveira; Pedrotti,Alceu.
ABSTRACT Concerns about the negative effects of agriculture on soil physical quality and soil organic carbon (SOC) pools have spurred on the adoption of conservation tillage systems in tropical regions. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term impacts (16th year) of conventional (CT), minimum (MT) and no-tillage (NT) practices and different cover crops (sunn hemp and a bean/millet sequence) on soil physical properties and SOC content of a corn cultivated Ultisol in the northeast of Brazil. Soil bulk density (Bd), soil penetration resistance (SPR), soil aggregation, and total aggregate-associated carbon (C) (4-2 mm) were evaluated. Tillage practices exerted strong control on soil physical properties and total aggregate-C content but were influenced by...

Soil tillage systems: changes in soil structure and crop response Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Mazurana,Michael; Levien,Renato; Müller,Jônatan; Conte,Osmar.
The introduction and intensification of no-tillage systems in Brazilian agriculture in recent decades have created a new scenario, increasing concerns about soil physical properties. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of different tillage systems on some physical properties of an Ultisol previously under native grassland. Five tillage methods were tested: no-tillage (NT), chiseling (Ch), no-tillage with chiseling every two years (NTCh2), chiseling using an equipment with a clod-breaking roller (ChR) and chiseling followed by disking (ChD). The bulk density, macroporosity, microporosity and total porosity, mechanical resistance to penetration, water infiltration into the soil and crop yields were evaluated. The values of soil bulk...
